Victims of Violence
One-quarter to one-half of females in the world (22% in the US) have experienced intimate partner violence. Twenty percent of women and 5-10% of men have experience childhood sexual abuse. In the US, over 63,000 cases of childhood sexual abuse were reported in 2010. Worldwide, about 1 in 4 women report having experienced some form of sexual violence by an intimate partner. Estimates suggest that the annual rate of rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is about 1 in every 35 women. Approximately 18% of women (nearly 1 in 5) in the US have been victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lives. There were an estimated 520,000 murders and 310,000 war-related deaths in 2000. Areas with the highest rates of homicide were in Southern Africa. There were estimated to be 37 active armed conflicts in the world in 2011 (primarily intrastate). Six of these conflicts reached the intensity of "war" (more than 1,000 battle-related deaths in 1 year). About 1 out of every 248 people in the US was a victim of a violent crime in the US in 2010.
